Due to nearby schools and bus stops, the intention was to create convenient shortcuts across the site for students and commuters. The site investigation uncovered a nearby small community garden. This led to an extension of this garden, devoting much of the landscape to growing vegetables and implementing a "Garden to Table" Cafe. This creates an opportunity for interaction, dining, learning, as well as a small revenue stream. Another main objective was to build a strong sense of community among the building's residents. Spaces can be expanded and pulled out from larger spaces to double square footage and provide a range of programmatic spaces. To achieve this, the movement of major furniture / room dividers and sliding panels takes a cue from Los Angeles’s Case Study Houses in which sliding glass doors blur the line between interior space and the comfortable Californian environment. Sustainability is essentially about flexibility, the best use of recyclable materials and the highest energy efficiencies will only have a short term impact unless they can adapt to the long term flexible requirements of a rapidly changing world. The second driving force was derived from the chance to interview the current resident of the site, in which I learned the house had a long history. It therefore became my intention to preserve some memory of what existed previously. The intent was to provide an open cultural experience to the immediate residential community, while also providing a performance platform for the nearby music scene, therefore bringing together the two different aspects of the neighborhood. The roof is accessible by an external circulation path located in the center of the building. The public path also leads to a secondary performance space in the tower, so that this component of the interior program could function after-hours and separately from the rest of the school. The tower was formed to bounce light into the building in conjunction with the light coming in through the circulation void. When the horizontal pipes that flow around the site (tracking the procession of cars) reach the machine they each incrementally bend upward at a compound angle to transition to the top plane and create an enclosure (this changing surface allows for a dynamic facade), the pipes bend back down vertically to allow viewing into the machine for patrons, then they bend back up and transform into the enclosure of the remaining program. Not only does this component match Toyota’s goals of sustainability, it is also a reaction to the huge lack of public green space within downtown LA. So it was my intent to maximize the amount of green space added to the site. The experience after being drawn towards the tall fins jutting out of the ground, is a movement down the stairs through the elongated space. Where the stairs lead up and out, the visitor is presented with adjacent usable spaces which draws people in due to a series of arches decreasing in height, hinting of something beyond.
