Material Architecture
The process logic of line and the resultant material choice of metal pipes led to the concept of the entire project as a machine in which the actual car wash machine is a focal point and everything explodes out from it into the remaining program and site. When the horizontal pipes that flow around the site (tracking the procession of cars) reach the machine they each incrementally bend upward at a compound angle to transition to the top plane and create an enclosure (this changing surface allows for a dynamic facade), the pipes bend back down vertically to allow viewing into the machine for patrons, then they bend back up and transform into the enclosure of the remaining program. Lastly, the pipes extrude out to act as benches for the waiting area and counter space for both the cafe and the cashier desk.
